Autumn’s New Hues

Nature's first green is gold, but this fall we're also loving red, emerald, electric blue and purple.

When it came to churning out clothes with a wow factor, designers passed with flying colors this fall. Of course, gray appeared (yet again) to be the new black, while black itself remained in fashion’s hot seat (especially combined with white in bold graphic prints). But surprisingly, a rainbow of glorious hues appeared on most runways, surprising some of us who expected a more subdued autumn palette. A few colors made a particularly strong impact: red, purple, royal blue, emerald green and gold.

Which of the season’s hues best suits your personality? Read on and find out. And don’t forget to check Red Typewriter’s Pinterest pages to see our top runway and ready-to-wear picks in each color family.  We’re showcasing the season’s hottest clothes in all price ranges, for all body types.

Light My Fire. If you’re the kind of woman who strives to live with passion and courage, red is your color. (It’s ours, too—our typewriter ain’t red for nothin’.) For fall, designers combined their continuing love of sheer, flowing fabrics with this bold hue to produce some of the most provocative, powerhouse pieces of the season. Photo above: Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Giada De Laurentiis walking the runway for the Heart Truth Red Dress Collection, Michael Costello and Donna Karan.

Ultra Violet. Purple is making a huge comeback for fall, with this splendid color appearing on everything from dresses and jackets to purses and tights. If you love to be the center of attention (that’s you, Your Royal Highness), don some violet duds and demand that much-required adoration. Visit our Purple Pinterest Page for lots of regal ready-to-wear options.

Emerald City. We’d like to believe Dorothy would’ve gotten there much faster had she been dressed the part. Emerald, forest and other enchanted shades of green are working their way into our entire wardrobes, from the boardroom (Ermanno Servino’s Doris-Day-worthy dress-and-jacket sets) to the bedroom (Victoria’s Secret’s newest satin slips). If you’re an earthy type who loves to make an entrance, this color’s for you. Visit our Emerald Green Pinterest Page for everyday inspiration.

Golden Child. Are you a shiny, happy gal? Then you’ll be thrilled to discover that gold is no longer just for evening. Back and bolder than ever, the color is appearing on American Hustle-inspired dresses, rompers and skinny jeans. But you can make a more subtle statement with a pair of metallic shoes or a gold blazer. Visit Gold Pinterest Page for more gleaming picks.

Royal Treatment. If you prefer to keep it cool but newsworthy, blue’s for you. This fall, royal is the shade of choice, with electric blue running a close second (especially on evening dresses and dance duds). Fabrics run the gamut from disco-worthy spandex to leather and mohair, leaving lovers of blue swimming in a sea of exciting options.
